Thinking big and small

December 20, 2020

“When making plans, think big. When making progress, think small.” — James Clear

The qualities that make a great CEO are different from the ones that make a great engineer/designer. If you are the person defining and executing the roadmap, you’ll struggle with this. I know I have.

When making plans, you must think big without letting the small details get in the way of your vision.

When making progress, you must carefully execute each step of the plan like a craftsman, and those same details define your day to day, iteration speed and release date.

Switching from one mode to another is challenging and requires discipline.

It gets even more challenging if you love building more than strategizing. You can get lost in your craft for months and forget the plan that set you off that path in the first place. It happened more times than I can recall.
